Please join us as we welcome Larry Gillis and his Hard Driving Bluegrass Band to TL for the 1st time. We are very pleased to add Larry and his band to our Entertainment Schedule thanks to Steve and the guys from Gold Wing Express. This is a tips only performance.
This powerful new ensemble of talented musicians can only be described as a hard-core, hard-driving, straight-up, traditional bluegrass band. With a sound that comes from the deep south, & the admiration of the legends of bluegrass music, their style is one of a kind.
Larry Gillis grew up in Soperton, a small town in south Georgia. He was raised on backwoods music & was especially influenced by his father to play the five string banjo. He developed a style reminiscent of Don Reno & Ralph Stanley, although plainly it is Larry’s own sound. After playing with his brother John for 20 years – formerly the Gillis Brothers – he as formed a new & highly talented band.
Alex Leach is from the Knoxville, Tennessee area, & has studied the Gillis Brothers sound since he first heard “Heart & Soul” at nine years old. Alex said he had always dreamed of meeting & playing with Larry & now at 22 years old, that dream has come true. Playing lead guitar & lead vocals, he complements that traditional sound that he & Larry keep true & dear to their hearts.
Rafe Waters, from Statesboro, Georgia, has loved nothing more in his life than traditional bluegrass & gospel music. With a desire to be a part of this music, he taught himself to play bass while working as a paramedic.
Ryan Gillis, Larry’s 16 year old adopted son is now playing guitar with the band. Larry started teaching him at the age of 14 & has showed a talent that he can be very proud of. Earning his way to a microphone is a great accomplishment with this “Hard Driving Bluegrass Band”.
